Picture frame wainscoting installation offers a wide range of design variations, depending on your interior design goals. Below, we’ll highlight a few options we install most often, each selected to complement the layout and aesthetic of the home.

Half Wall Wainscoting
Half wall wainscoting installation is the most traditional form of picture frame wainscoting and is what originally brought wainscoting into popularity for our company back in 1993. It remains a timeless choice and is still commonly installed in homes today. This style includes a chair rail that runs around the full perimeter of the installation area, with panel moulding used to form square or rectangular boxes beneath.

Full Wall Wainscoting with Chair rail
Full wall wainscoting with a chair rail uses the same layout as traditional half wall wainscoting, but the panel boxes continue above the chair rail and extend toward the ceiling. These panels usually finish about 4–5 inches below the ceiling or crown moulding. This look works best in homes with ceiling heights of 9–10 feet or higher, as it maintains balance without making the room feel cramped. For anything under 9 feet, we typically recommend the traditional half wall approach.

Full Wall Wainscoting Double Box
Full wall double box wainscoting follows the same concept as full wall wainscoting with a chair rail, but the chair rail is removed to create a more modern look. This style has become increasingly popular and is now used in many modern as well as traditional homes.

Full Wall Single Box Wainscoting
Full wall single box wainscoting is the most “modern option” out of all picture frame wainscoting styles. The simplified layout gives the space a clean, streamlined appearance without feeling busy. This style is often chosen for modern homes and condos where a subtle architectural detail is preferred. It allows the room to feel open while still adding character.
